Wise Food Selections: Guidelines For Busy Women

Summer means barbecues, beaches and ballparks- these fun activities offer appealing food and refreshments. Many women who are health conscious need to know various wise food selections to be able to maintain ideal weight and continue their healthy lifestyle.

Busy women can benefit a lot when they know how to choose their foods properly. Nowadays, sweet baked goods come in healthy varieties without lowering down the quality and taste.

There comes a muffin in different healthy flavors like chocolate, and blueberry and tasty cakes in chocolate, lemon and carrot flavors. They can delight your palate and the good thing is that they contain lower fats and calories compared to usual sweets.

Our food choices give a major impact on our health. Choosing food should be taken more seriously because health is not something that can be easily taken back once we lose it. We need to find something that can satisfy our hunger while keeping our body healthy.

A balance diet is what we all need. Most foods when eaten in moderation can fit into this category. Here are the tips on how to select food wisely:

  1. Consider whole grains. At least three servings of 1 oz whole grain products daily is recommended to include in your diet.
  2. Take foods that are rich in calcium. Select low fat milk products if you are cutting on your weight.
  3.  Make a balance out of everything- eat and exercise. Ensure that you are not consuming more calories than you are burning.
  4. Lessen your intake of trans fats and saturated fats. They tend to increase the development of heart diseases. When buying food, always look for low trans fat on the pack.
  5.  Exercise regularly. You can promote good health, ideal weight and overall well being by engaging in various sports and activities.

Canned Foods “Can” Be Healthy!

The latest controversy about canned food is BPA–Bisphenol-A–leaching into foods from the lining of cans. A 2004 study by the CDC-Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-revealed that this hormone disrupting chemical can found in the bodies of 95% of Americans.

The plastics industry says that a little BPA is not harmful. (www.Bisphenol-A.org). However, there is much contradictory data from watchdog agencies such as: www.environmentalhealthnews.org or www.bisphenolafree.org.

What canned foods are safe?

First, anything in glass jars or paper boxes will not contain BPA. This includes many of the spaghetti sauces, salad dressings, oils, fruits, jams, soups, alternative milks (soy, almond, rice, coconut) and juices, Pomi tomatoes in boxes, or BioNature tomatoes in glass jars.

Some of the foods that are actually in cans are also safe because the companies have taken the initiative to provide BPA-free cans. Here is a partial list:

Eden beans, and rice and beans, Bearitos refried beans, Vital Choice salmon, Native Forest coconut milk, and pineapple, Wild Planet light tuna, Trader Joe’s canned vegetables-corn, beans, chicken, seafood, (their chili and soups are not in BPA free cans,)

Imagine, Pacific and Kirkland boxed soups and broths. Muir Glen states that they are “in transition” regarding BPA free cans, so watch for specific products.

Canned foods like the ones I have listed are a wonderful convenience. Who has time to cook their own tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes? Or cook a pot of beans all day? Or make your own chicken, vegetable or meat stock for soup? And who doesn’t love a good tuna or salmon salad? Canned fish keeps all its food value, even when canned, and is a great source of protein.

All of these foods are wonderful for winter meals. I think I’ll go open up a box of organic butternut squash soup, and a can of refried black beans!

Chinese Food Recipes

Ok, so you’re probably thinking “another fried rice recipe?” I assure you this one is different, this is definitely a Chinese Food Recipe that you HAVE to try! This Shrimp Fried Rice is great as a course by itself or paired up with any Chinese meat entrée.

First, assemble all the ingredients you will need, which include:

  1. 4 oz. uncooked, de-shelled shrimp
  2. 4 cups cooked rice
  3. 4 oz. diced, cooked ham
  4. 2 eggs
  5. 1 onion
  6. 1 green onion
  7. ½ cup peas
  8. 1 tbsp. soy sauce
  9. 1 tsp. salt
  10. 1 tsp. pepper

Seasonings – I like to use a Cajun seasoning, it adds a little kick – season to taste

Oil – for frying

First, go through the shrimp and make sure it’s deveined.

Chop up Meat and Vegetables and put in a large bowl, set aside.

Beat the eggs in a small mixing bowl, add salt, pepper and a little seasoning.

I like to make my fried rice in a wok. So, go ahead and add your oil in the wok, normally about a ½ cup of oil is needed. When the oil is nice and hot, pour ½ of your egg mixture in the wok and let it cook over medium heat for about 2 minutes, turn just once.

Go ahead and cook the other half of the egg mixture this way. Let cool, then cut eggs up and set aside for later.

Add the shrimp to the oil and any seasonings, again I like to use Cajun seasoning. Cook for 2 minutes. Stir in the onion and cook for a few minutes, remove and set aside.

Stir fry the green peas and then the ham. Remove them and set aside.

*At this point I add a little more oil, about ¼ cup.

Turn the heat on the wok down to medium and cook the rice. Add the soy sauce, this will give the rice its brown color. Add all the other ingredients except the green onion. Cook for a few minutes.

Remove from wok and serve on your favorite serving platter.

Use green onions as a garnishment, this adds a nice touch of color to the dish.
